Driver-dispatcher communication is the real-time, bidirectional flow of information between commercial drivers and dispatchers. This includes updates on delivery status, changes in routing, equipment issues, traffic delays, and safety concerns. It serves as the central nervous system of any fleet operation. Why It’s Critical Effective communication ensures: Operational efficiency ¾ Faster, smarter routing reduces idle time and optimizes resource allocation. Driver safety ¾ Immediate updates on road conditions or mechanical issues help prevent accidents. Customer satisfaction ¾ Clear ETAs and proactive notifications create transparency and trust.  A 2024 survey by FleetOwner showed that companies with integrated communication platforms experienced 23% fewer missed deliveries compared to those using traditional methods. Consequences of Poor Communication When communication breaks down, the ripple effects can be costly: Delayed or failed deliveries. Increased fuel consumption from inefficient routing. Frustrated drivers and dispatchers due to unclear expectations. Compromised safety from unreported vehicle issues or last-minute route changes. Even minor miscommunications can result in lost revenue, regulatory penalties, and diminished brand reputation. Industries That Rely Heavily on This Communication This isn't just a trucking issue. The need for precise, timely communication spans multiple industries: Logistics and freight: Real-time tracking and coordination are mission-critical. E-commerce and delivery services: High-volume, time-sensitive deliveries require agile dispatching. Construction fleets: Equipment deliveries must align precisely with project timelines. Field service operations: Technicians and contractors depend on accurate job details and updates. Truck weight limits are legal restrictions on the maximum weight a commercial vehicle can carry, including the truck itself, cargo, and passengers. These limits are set by federal and state authorities to ensure road safety, prevent infrastructure damage, and regulate freight transportation. Understanding truck weight limits is essential for anyone involved in freight logistics, fleet operations, or commercial driving. These limits are not arbitrary. They are put in place to ensure the safety of drivers, the public, and the infrastructure we all rely on. Department of Transportation (DOT): Sets federal weight standards and oversees enforcement policies. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA): Regulates commercial vehicles engaged in interstate commerce, including weight compliance. Federal Bridge Formula: A calculation method used to determine maximum allowable weight based on axle count and spacing, protecting bridge integrity. Types of Truck Weight Limits 1. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)GVWR refers to the maximum allowable total weight of the truck when fully loaded, including the vehicle itself, fuel, cargo, passengers, and equipment. Exceeding this limit can strain the vehicle’s structural components and increase the risk of mechanical failure. 2. Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)GAWR specifies how much weight a single axle can carry safely. Each axle on a vehicle has its own rating. Surpassing this limit can cause damage to tires, brakes, suspension, and roadways. 3. Bridge Formula Weight LimitsThe Federal Bridge Formula is used to determine how much weight can be legally carried over bridges. It considers the number of... --- - Published: 2025-07-03 - Modified: 2025-10-13 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/what-are-the-new-truck-emission-regulations-in-2025/ - Categories: Uncategorized New emission regulations for trucks in 2025 aim to drastically reduce NOx and CO₂ emissions by requiring advanced engine technologies and promoting zero-emission vehicles. Federal vs. State-Level Regulations In 2025, both federal and state governments are tightening emission standards for commercial vehicles. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is rolling out its Clean Trucks Plan, which sets stricter standards for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by heavy-duty trucks. These regulations focus on cleaner engines, more efficient fuel usage, and the gradual shift toward electric and hydrogen-powered alternatives. Meanwhile, California's Air Resources Board (CARB) has enacted even more aggressive measures through its Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) and Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) regulations. These rules not only limit tailpipe emissions but also mandate that a certain percentage of fleet purchases be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) starting in 2025. Key Difference:The EPA sets a national baseline, but states like California (and others that adopt CARB rules) can impose stricter emission limits, especially for diesel-powered vehicles. Timeline and Rollout The implementation of these regulations follows a phased approach: January 2025: New heavy-duty vehicles must meet updated NOx and CO₂ emission standards under the EPA rule. 2025–2030: Gradual increase in zero-emission truck sales required in CARB-compliant states. 2027: Second phase of EPA GHG standards begins, with tighter limits and enforcement for vehicle manufacturers. 2035 Goal (CARB): All new medium- and heavy-duty trucks sold in California must be zero-emission. Trucking companies and independent operators are expected to either retrofit older vehicles or invest in compliant... --- - Published: 2025-05-23 - Modified: 2025-06-19 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/secure-your-future-on-the-road-a-truck-drivers-comprehensive-guide-to-retirement-planning/ - Categories: Uncategorized The open road offers a unique sense of freedom and independence, a defining characteristic of the trucking life. This initial step involves passing a written CDL permit test, which assesses your knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle operation, and safety regulations. While the test may seem straightforward, many aspiring drivers stumble due to common mistakes. Understanding these pitfalls and proactively addressing them can significantly increase your chances of success. In this blog post, we will explore the 10 most common mistakes people make on the CDL permit test and provide valuable insights to help you avoid them. 1. Underestimating the Importance of Preparation One of the biggest mistakes people make is underestimating the importance of thorough preparation for the CDL permit test. It might seem intimidating, but with proper preparation and guidance, you can pass this test with confidence. Below, we share some invaluable tips for conquering the highway and acing your CDL Road Test. Tip 1: Get Comprehensive Training The journey to pass your CDL Road Test begins with comprehensive CDL training. A high-quality training program imparts the crucial skills and knowledge required to operate a commercial vehicle efficiently and safely. It will equip you with the understanding you need to handle a variety of situations, from mastering backing maneuvers to conducting thorough vehicle inspections, and successfully navigating diverse road and weather conditions. Tip 2: Familiarize Yourself with the Vehicle Knowledge is power, and in this case, the more you know about the vehicle you'll be driving during the test, the more empowered you'll be. Dedicate time to learning about the vehicle's controls, its transmission system, its dimensions, and its blind spots. Familiarity breeds confidence, which can significantly enhance your comfort and performance during the test. Tip 3: Practice, Practice, Practice It's an old adage, but it's especially true when preparing for your CDL Road Test: Practice makes perfect. In most states, there are over 100 items to be checked on the tractor-trailer. Passing the test requires each student to study and memorize the items tested. Drivers need to be able to point out a part, and describe what condition it is in. Here are some important tips to help you learn how to pass the vehicle inspection: 1. Read the CDL Manual. The state manual has a comprehensive list of items that will be tested. Take the time to read and understand the items. Ask your instructor questions if you are unclear on a part’s function, condition or location. 2. Make Index Cards and Use Them as “Flash Cards”. Write a specific vehicle part on the front of the card, and the description on the back. For example, the front might say “headlights. ” The back of the card might say “lights are working, not cracked or broken. ” 3. Repeat After me! There is no way around it: to learn over 100 parts, you need to practice and repeat. Every day of your training, see if you can practice a full pre-trip, start to finish. 4. Buddy System. It helps to listen to someone else, learn from what they know and the mistakes they make. Get a buddy from your class and each of you do a vehicle inspection.... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/cdl-school-tip-why-one-on-one-cdl-training-works-best/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights, SAGE News & Updates Watch your mirrors Keep an eye on your gauges Listen to the engine Shift smoothly Learn to double-clutch Know where your trailer is Keep an eye on other traffic Pay attention to your speed Drive at night These are just a few of the skills you will learn in truck driving school. Imagine trying to learn how to throw a football or play the guitar or ride a bike, if mostly what you did is WATCH someone else do it? Unfortunately, most truck driving schools want you to do exactly that. You pay to watch other students drive on the road. Most schools put 3 or 4 students in a truck and rotate you into the driver’s seat for your 15 or 20 minutes of time behind the wheel. The rest of the time you are sitting in a bench seat in the sleeper area – you are WAY BEHIND THE WHEEL! Don’t Pay to Watch! Don’t Pay to Watch! At SAGE, all truck driving time spent on the road is done with one student per truck. Just you and the instructor. No one else is in the truck. But for long stretches of time, career truckers find themselves sitting in one position, eating junk from truck stops and gas stations, and guzzling coffee to stay alert. It’s easy to fall into bad habits when you’re working hard to meet tight deadlines, and your health can suffer as a result. Here are 5 quick tips to help you stay fit and healthy Over The Road 1) Start todayMany veteran truck drivers admit to gaining 50 or 100 pounds (or more) in their first few years on the job. A drop of prevention is worth an ocean of cure. It will be a lot easier to master a few healthy habits as you begin your career to keep the weight off than it will be to lose it later on. And even more importantly, it may not be safe to go for a walk or jog once you park the truck at night. The best way to combat this is to begin your day with just a little bit of even low-intensity exercise — go for a 1-mile walk or do some basic calisthenics like jumping jacks, burpees, and lunges. 30 minutes should be plenty to last you the rest of the day, as long as you can get your diet in check. 3) Eat... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-20 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/10-useful-tips-for-driving-a-truck-during-the-holiday-season/ - Categories: Truck Driving Tips, CDL Training, SAGE News & Updates With the 2019 holiday season nearly upon us, more and more vehicles will be clogging the nation’s roadways, making it even harder for the men and women navigating those big rigs. According to statistics, during the holidays, there are about 36% more vehicles on the road. Most of this traffic is made up of an increase in passenger cars (traveling for the holidays) delivery fleets (delivering for the holidays), and people-carriers, such as buses (transporting people for the holidays). Adding to that, is the potential for bad weather and decreased daylight hours. Both of which only add to the stress. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the traditionally, the highest volume of vehicles on the road is from the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through Jan. 1. With all of this in mind, here are 10 useful tips for Driving During the Holiday Season: Be Extra Patient in Winter ConditionsThe holiday season can bring some pretty rough weather conditions with it, especially in the winter. No driver should be continuing on the road during any severe conditions. Rushing to get the job done is not worth the risk of rollovers, jackknifes and collisions. A trucker must also maintain space with vehicles around you and avoid tailgating. Giving that extra space in bad conditions in case of an emergency stop is optimal for preventing a problematic situation. Slower speeds are a must during the winter, and taking one’s time is the best advice for trucker safety. Each year there are thousands of collisions between trains and vehicles, and these collisions may result in injuries and deaths. SAGE Truck Driving Schools teach some basic rules about trucks at railroad crossings. Here are some important safety tips for truck drivers when crossing a railroad track: It can take the average freight train traveling at 55 mph a mile or more to stop. At crossings, don’t stop any closer than 15 feet. If you’re in traffic, don’t go forward if you can’t safely clear the crossing. Make sure that trailer jacks (landing gear) are in the up position; non-retracted trailer jacks can cause trailers to become stuck on crossings. Approach tracks cautiously, and always expect a train, even on rarely used tracks. Be cautious any time, day or night, since trains do not usually travel on a regular schedule. Turn on your four-way flashers to warn other drivers that you are slowing down. Turn off any fans and music, and roll your windows down as you come to the track so you can hear well. Once you are stopped, carefully listen for a train. Look both ways down the track. Be watchful of your mirrors, cab, or anything that may block your view. Look twice before proceeding. If you see a train, understand that it is closer and moving faster than you think. Always wait for it to pass before... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-20 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/cdl-training-tips-what-questions-should-i-ask-a-trucking-recruiter/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights Truck driver training opens many doors for employment opportunities, and increased pay and benefits. Going to a good truck driving school provides access to some of the best trucking companies that hire new CDL drivers. Top schools will give you a chance to hear from recruiters about trucking companies and the professional commercial truck driving jobs they offer. Because there are so many types of driving jobs, benefits and lifestyles, knowing what questions to ask a trucking recruiter is important. We can’t cover them all, but here are some helpful ideas (in no particular order): What is the average age of company truck tractors? Companies buy equipment at different rates. They sell older equipment, and buy newer based on a schedule. The average age is important because newer trucks usually means better maintenance reliability, and more safety features. The lower the average age, the better. A good average would be less than 3 years. What brand of trucks do you run? Some companies provide very basic tractors, while others offer higher end trucks. Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, Volvo and International are the primary equipment manufacturers. Ask what type and year of truck new drivers are assigned to. What truck accessories are included in company equipment? Ask about refrigerators, alternate power units, wifi or satellite packages, power inverters, and other comforts. Keep in mind that most of these types of benefits may not be available to drivers just starting out. What safety features do trucks have? Technology for tractor trailer safety... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/cdl-training-basic-skills-what-you-need-to-know/ - Categories: Truck Driving Tips, CDL Training Most people who want to get a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) know that they must pass the CDL test. But what does a driver need to know to pass the CDL test? First, a driver must have a normal state driver’s license. Then, they must pass several written computer-based tests at their state department of motor vehicles. The minimum written tests for a typical Class A (tractor-trailer with air brakes) CDL permit (CDLP) are the General Knowledge test, the Air Brake test, and the Combination Vehicle test. Each of these tests requires the student driver to study the state CDL manual, and learn basic information and concepts. SAGE students can use an awesome online tool to help them study called ProDriverU, which is easy to use, has lots of photos and diagrams, and is self-paced, with hundreds of learning modules and practice tests. It makes getting your CDLP easier than ever! To get a permit, the driver must also be able to pass the medical exam required by the U. S. Department of Transportation. SAGE can help arrange that exam with a local doctor, and answer most questions about health/medical requirements. Once a driver has the CDLP, they can drive a truck as long as a licensed CDL holder is in the truck with them! This is how SAGE can help you get a CDL, since our instructors help you learn the behind the wheel driving skills step by step. The HOS rules have been in effect for many years, but, as with many regulations, changes have been made as they sort through a variety of challenges. The HOS rules are enforced by the U. S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Most interstate CMV drivers are required to use Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) in place of paper logs to record drivers’ hours of service (although backup paper logs are still required). On May 14, 2020, the FMCSA announced four main changes to the HOS regulations. All commercial drivers and motor carriers will need to comply with the new rules, effective September 29, 2020. The new rules are intended to give commercial drivers more flexibility and allow them to be more productive. It is important, however, for drivers to understand how and when to implement them properly to limit individual liability. The new rules will include the following four key changes for interstate truck and bus drivers: Increased flexibility for the 30-minute break rule.  Revisions to the 30-minute break rule for truck drivers so they can remain “on duty” for their breaks and not have to take a break until completing eight hours of driving time, rather than consecutive time. Free agents do not have any commitments that restrict their actions, making them “free” to shop around for the highest bidder. Most players start out under contract for several years, before earning their way out of the obligation, and into free agency, where the big money often comes. So how does this apply to someone looking to get their CDL? Try Googling “CDL School, Truck Driving School, Get My CDL, etc. ” and you will instantly see options offering free training, bonuses, etc. to attract your attention. What they aren’t mentioning is your obligation to them once you have your CDL. Most of these offers come from trucking companies looking for drivers. They are willing to provide basic CDL training in exchange for your commitment to them, (usually 1 year). When you are done with the program, you are obligated to work for them. The terms differ, but one way or another, they all get their money back (and then some) over time, while you drive for them. You obtain your CDL, and get yourself into the work force, but it’s not the only option. At SAGE Truck Driving School, you are not beholden to anyone after your graduation. By law, solo drivers must periodically stop and rest before they are allowed to continue driving. Every driver has a 14-hour on-duty cap and an 11-hour driving cap, per day they have to abide by. Team driving eliminates the down time, as one can rest while the other drives. This allows a truck to keep moving, virtually 24 hours a day. It’s no surprise that trucking companies love teams. It maximizes their profit margin by keeping their trucks moving around the clock. Because of this, team driving is obviously in high demand. Some new drivers find it to be a good way to get their foot in the door at a reputable company right out of school. Many carriers are paying top dollar mileage and giving hefty sign on bonuses to team drivers. Do a Google search and you’ll see companies offering upwards of $30,000 right now, with no experience necessary. For some, that is the icing on the cake, they just can’t pass up. Why not Team Drive? So, what’s the downside? For starters it’s safe to say it’s definitely not for everyone. Even if you have a qualified good friend or spouse, it doesn’t necessarily mean... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/driver-safety-in-the-blink-of-an-eye-always-signal-your-intent/ - Categories: Truck Driving Tips, CDL Training The turn signal or “blinker” on a truck is a critical tool. You might not think so, but just the simple use of your turn signal can significantly reduce the chances of an accident. Studies indicate that about half of all road users fail to use their turn signal when executing a turn or changing lanes. Or they turn on their signal at the last moment, which does not provide enough warning to other drivers. Or they fail to cancel the signal after executing the turn or lane change. The key is to use your turn signal every time you turn or changes lanes. No matter the traffic conditions, type of road, vehicle density or weather, use your blinker. Even if you think you are the only one on the road, use your signal. The habit of using your signal every time will help ensure that you always do it, even without thinking. Turn on the signal early, and keep it on until you have executed the maneuver. Check mirrors and confirm you have space. Then turn it off when it is safe to do so. Signaling your intent in a vehicle is a basic principle of safe driving: making sure other drivers see you. Your signal helps notify other drivers that your vehicle is changing position, so they can adjust speed and give you space. It will save lives and reduce crash frequency. The opposite is also true: if you make an abrupt move of a tractor-trailer, with no warning or... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/drug-alcohol-clearinghouse-what-you-need-to-know-for-cdl-training/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights In January, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse took effect. For those of you looking to get into the field of truck driving, we will attempt to summarize what it all means. For starters, the Clearinghouse was designed to identify drivers who fail an alcohol or drug test while employed by a carrier, or are looking to obtain a CDL. In the past, a driver could relocate to another state, or move to another unsuspecting carrier, before their record caught up with them. The Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 requires certain transportation drivers to undergo drug and alcohol testing by the United States Department of Transportation. However, its guidelines only mandate background checks of potential employees for drug and alcohol violations for a three-year period. The FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DAC) is a database of D. O. T. administered drug and/or alcohol test results. It contains all violations that occur on or after January 6, 2020 and includes results with a BAC over . 04, positive drug test results and refusals to test. These violations stay in the database for a five-year period or until the driver completes the return-to-duty process, whichever is later. Why is FMCSA implementing these strict measures? Simply put, for safety reasons. Commercial drivers are tasked with heavy loads in large vehicles that need to be delivered in a timely manner. Obviously, being under the influence of drugs or alcohol affects driving skills. Alcohol impacts... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/how-can-the-trucking-industry-attract-younger-cdl-drivers/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights, SAGE News & Updates The COVID-19 Pandemic has had one somewhat positive outcome: it has shown how important America’s logistics networks are, and demonstrated why the country’s truck drivers are so important. With little warning, freight delivery channels were challenged by this situation. But America’s truck drivers did what they always do: they got in their trucks and they drove millions of miles delivering food, hospital supplies, manufacturing and home building materials, and much more. The fact is, they kept America moving. But a commercial vehicle driver shortage is a looming problem. As the country gears up to come out of the Pandemic-forced recession and significant unemployment, the driver shortage must be addressed. The country’s aging baby-boomer drivers are retiring. The average age of commercial truck drivers in the U. S. is over 55. Over the next decade, the trucking industry will need to hire over 1 million new drivers. One solution to this problem is to offer younger drivers a pathway to a high paying career in trucking. Unfortunately, while 49 states allow individuals to obtain their commercial driver’s license (CDL) at the age of 18, federal regulations prohibit CDL drivers under 21 from driving across state boundaries. They can drive within a state, but cannot cross state lines. This means a 19 year old driver based in Philadelphia, PA cannot legally accept a route driving just a few miles to New Jersey, but inexplicably can make the 630-mile round trip in a tractor trailer from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, PA. The trucking industry... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/the-costs-of-changing-jobs-getting-and-keeping-the-best-trucking-job-after-cdl-training/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights, SAGE News & Updates Most people go to truck driving school because they want to get a good job and earn a better living. For this reason, truck driver training can be a great choice for many people. That’s also why job placement assistance is such a big part of CDL training at SAGE. Not all schools provide comprehensive trucking job employment assistance, but we view it as a critical part of the services we provide. Deciding which trucking companies to drive for is an important decision. But there is also another aspect of the job search. Choosing the wrong company can cost you more money than you think. That’s because there is a financial cost to the driver who changes jobs. For those who change jobs frequently, the cost is even higher. While you are in school, ask a lot of questions about different trucking companies. We’ve talked about these kinds of questions in other Blog posts. We recommend you do this so you make the most educated decision about a job. Studies have shown that changing jobs will cost a driver a significant sum of money when they change from one carrier to another. In fact, over a 30 year career, the average driver can lose over $100,000 in wages and benefits if they change jobs frequently. Here are some of the costs that a driver will incur by changing jobs: 1. Immediate loss of income. There is another group that is often forgotten and taken for granted: linemen. When was the last time you flipped on the light switch and wondered if there power was going to successfully be delivered? Linemen quietly play a critical role in our every day lives. The first step to becoming a journeymen lineman is becoming an apprentice. The duties of a lineman apprentice are to assist company linemen in building and maintaining electrical power systems. Lineman apprentice responsibilities include taking measurements and helping journeyman linemen with equipment and various tasks. The path to apprenticeships can be union or non-union. Across both circles it is widely accepted that having a CDL is what will make you most competitive for these positions. Apprenticeships are programs where you are paid to learn and so naturally there are limited number of apprenticeships each year in the line trade. Getting a CDL offers very strong career flexibility for lineman. Not only does it allow you to enter the workforce quicker it also gives your stronger negotiating and leverage for working on projects in other states. While some utility licenses have geographic boundaries, a CDL is valid in every state (assuming it is legally issued in the state that you reside). If snow and ice is allowed to build up over days, it can become out right lethal. In 1999, New Hampshire driver Jessica Smith was killed after a huge piece of ice slid from the top of a trailer and smashed into her vehicle. The state responded by passing a law known as Jessica’s Law in 2002. Simply put, the law states that drivers who don’t remove ice and snow from their vehicles can be cited and fined in the state of New Hampshire. Since then, several other states have passed an enacted snow and ice clearing laws. Aside from hefty fines, when pulled over, drivers are also required to climb on top of their trailers and clear them before being allowed to continue driving. The following is a current list of states with such laws: Pennsylvania New Jersey Connecticut Rhode Island Alabama Georgia Iowa Michigan Wisconsin Even in states that don’t currently have laws on the books, drivers can still be cited for ice and snow slides using other state laws, based on negligence and similar state statutes and laws. For example, the state of Massachusetts has no specific snow and ice laws on the books. However, they found a driver guilty of “transporting an unsecured load” in an ice related incident. Laws like this can be used to fine and punish truckers... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-17 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/will-driver-less-trucks-replace-truck-drivers-in-the-near-future/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights As the buzz around driver-less (autonomous) trucks increases, some who are debating a career in truck driving question the future of the industry. At SAGE Truck Driving School, we are seeing an increased demand for new drivers, but decided to do some research on just how close we are to seeing these vehicles on the road. A report by the American Center for Mobility, projects that significant numbers of automated vehicles will not be deployed until near 2030. When that happens, we might see a drop in car driving jobs like taxi cabs, but for truck driving jobs that is hardly the case. Studies indicate there is still so much to be figured out. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows the readiness for such vehicles to adequately handle the challenge of taking over all driver functions is still very much in doubt. According to experts, there is just no substitute for human drivers in situations like negotiating hills and curves, adapting to weather conditions, etc. Aside from concerns about ability, safety and readiness, there are major legal concerns to think about. Consider this: There is no legal path to suing a self-driving truck that hits and kills someone. What happens when there is no driver to sue? Based on current liability laws, the freight company who made the truck cannot be sued. Even if those liability laws were changed, that would mean the maker of the self-driving software, the equipment manufacturers, and everyone else involved in the truck’s machinery could be sued. Clearly, this... --- - Published: 2023-08-15 - Modified: 2025-06-17 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/truck-driving-jobs-what-are-the-career-benefits-for-a-truck-driver/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights One of the most important aspects of trucking is the great pay the industry offers. But when you consider a career change, there are many aspects of the job you should think about. If you want to get your CDL and become a truck driver, trucking offers many benefits to the new driver: High-Paying Trucking Jobs: With starting first year pay that can be up to $55,000 per year, drivers have the opportunity to make really good money. And with the current driver shortage and the amount of freight shipments nationwide and locally, the opportunities are better than ever. Many first year drivers are earning over $1,000 per week, plus bonuses. Flexible Lifestyle of Trucking: One of the things that attracts a lot of people to trucking is the flexible lifestyle. You don’t work normal hours, you don’t report to an office. Instead, you travel America’s roads on a more flexible schedule. You are on your own, responsible for your freight, and the non-driving time is your own. Companies recognize this and are doing their best to get drivers home and on dedicated runs that drivers want. Job Security – Truckers Can’t be Outsourced: There is no way the job of an American truck driver can be “outsourced” to Mexico or China. The freight is in America, and the trucks that move that freight drive U. S. roads every day. So truck drivers who have earned a CDL are in a really strong position to always have job security. Next step is figuring out what to do with all of it. Hopefully you’ve even gone the extra step to ensure you stored everything in a safe place, and kept track of all your expenses on a spreadsheet or notebook. First, let’s take a look at the top write-offs for truck drivers that are often missed, starting with the common, every day stuff. The IRS lets you deduct 50% of the cost for your mobile phone and internet data plans, as well as 100% of the cost of the device itself. Truck drivers can also deduct 80% of their meals, travel expenses, and incidentals while spending the night away from home. This includes all tolls, parking feels and fuel as well. We use our eyes more, we have a higher priority with things that are visual, and we also aren’t distracted by auditory things, so we are able to pay closer attention to things visually. ” Since 2013, people who are deaf or hard of hearing have been able to earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL), but the process is still far from easy. They must request an exemption from the Department of Transportation’s Physical Qualification Standards, which requires a lot of paperwork and patience. It is only after months of processing is complete that a potential driver can begin their training program. Stephen completed his CDL training at Sage Truck Driving school in Grand Junction. “Sage took the time to train me and make sure everything was good,” he said. “They were very professional in how they went about doing everything. It was a wonderful experience. They had great leadership and great teachers as well. ” “Stephen’s transformation was amazing to watch and be a part of. This includes long haul, all the way to the “last mile” deliveries of your e-commerce purchases. With the national labor shortage, trucking companies need drivers right now. So if you’ve ever wanted the flexibility of a job with high paying options for employment in an industry that always has opportunities, now is a great time to consider getting your CDL and becoming a truck driver. However, truck driving is not for everyone, and you will need to decide “is truck driving a good career move for me? ” Although trucking may not be a fit for everyone considering it, the industry offers big advantages for truck drivers. This article should help you decide whether a trucking career is right for you. Before you decide to attend a CDL training program, consider the advantages and disadvantages of being a truck driver: Getting Paid Based on Productivity as a Driver. Commercial truck drivers are usually paid in a way that is different than most workers. They are paid based on their productivity, usually by the mile driven or the total load. So there is some variation in weekly pay since it may differ from week to week. The advantage is that YOU determine how hard you want to work and how much you want to make. This behavior can come in many forms, be it physical threats or reckless or aggressive driving, directed at another driver, pedestrian or cyclist in an attempt to intimidate them, or express their frustration. Lane changes and merging are the leading causes of road rage between trucks and other vehicles, according to most truckers surveyed. Especially cars abruptly squeezing in front of tractor trailers, forcing them to slam on the brakes. Most of us experience or have experienced road rage in our personal vehicles. Whether you’re yelling at the car in front of you for going 25 mph in a 55 mph zone, or blowing your horn at someone for taking too long to make a left turn. Road rage affects all of us, and not in a good way. This is why it’s important to understand what causes it, and ways to avoid it. Here are some common types of road rage:  Tailgating. Yelling. Honking Horn in anger. Making angry or lude gestures. Blocking another vehicle from changing lanes. Intentionally cutting off another vehicle. Stepping out of a vehicle to confront another driver. Intentionally bumping into or ramming another vehicle. Here are a few tips to avoid road rage situations: Don’t cut off other drivers. Don’t drive slowly in the left (fast) lane. Don’t tailgate. Don’t make gestures to other drivers. Use your horn for emergencies only. Road rage can be triggered by circumstances other than bad drivers... --- - Published: 2023-05-25 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-local-truck-driving-jobs/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights Many of our graduates ask about local driving options. Who can blame them? Theoretically it should have very little impact on your current lifestyle and habits, right? Unfortunately, local jobs tend to be a little harder to get, immediately after obtaining your CDL. The question is, what are the advantages and disadvantages to a local driving job vs driving over the road? In this article, we will take a look at the most common pros and cons to driving local. First let’s look at some Advantages Home Time Putting it simply, driving local means being home more. That’s probably the single biggest advantage for most people, and for a good reason. Local driving jobs generally mean you’ll be home every night. Maybe not every single night, but most nights for sure. For drivers with a family, especially with kids, that is a big consideration. Health and Well Being Balancing good health and wellbeing is something we all try to achieve. Being over the road makes that challenge even more difficult. Local drivers tend to spend less time behind the wheel over all, and as a result, are less exposed to the safety risks and poor eating habits of being over the road. They are also typically more active, making more stops, and moving around throughout the day more. Hence getting more exercise. Weekends Off Aside from being home every night, local drivers tend to be off on the weekends as well. Of course, it depends on the carrier and what... --- - Published: 2023-05-25 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/top-5-tips-on-defensive-driving-for-truck-drivers/ - Categories: Truck Driving Tips, CDL Training As the saying goes, “The best offense is a good defense”, and when it comes to being safe behind the wheel of a commercial truck, this definitely applies. Keeping you, your truck, other motorists, and your cargo safe is obviously critical while on the road. There are number of ways to improve your safety and reduce risk, while driving. Here are 5 solid defensive driving tips any truck driver can apply. 1. Stay healthyWearing your seat belt every day helps keep you safe, but equally as important is getting enough sleep. Sleeping well helps your focus when you are driving. Eating right and exercising will keep you in shape, and give you the stamina you need for long days and nights on the road. Staying safe also means you should take breaks when you start to feel tired. Doing what you need to keep yourself in the best mental and physical condition is as important as your driving skills and years of experience. 2. Keep distractions at a minimumEvery driver needs to be connected, but not so much that the connections are distractions. Phones with constant notifications or non-critical calls ringing in too often should be avoided. If you have something going on at home that’s distracting you, do your best to put it aside until you’re done working. It may be easier said than done with the hours spent alone each day, but try your best. Bad habits are hard to break, but your friends and family will understand... --- - Published: 2023-05-25 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/is-being-an-owner-operator-for-you/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights The job market right now is on fire. Truck driving jobs are everywhere. Large carriers continue to offer incentives and bonuses to recruit as many drivers as they can get their hands on. But working for an existing company is not the only option out there for CDL holders. You may have heard the term “Owner/Operator” but what does that mean, and is it something you want to consider? Obviously, the first thing you need to do is get your CDL. At that point, you are fully legal and ready to roll. Not all carriers hire new drivers. Some do, but it can often take years to start earning veteran driver wages. Becoming and owner/operator means you determine your own fate, financially, from day one. Once you have your CDL, you would obviously need a truck of your own. That can be costly, but you won’t be spending years preparing for a well-paid career. Instead, you will learn on the road and start earning more immediately. While the pay varies depending if you work for a large shipper or a smaller one, the average starting owner/ operator salary in the United States currently is $112,933 to $143,727 according to Salary. comObviously this is a huge incentive, but not everyone is cut out for being their own boss. Job stability is a big thing for most people. Signing on with a major carrier is arguably the most stable course of action. However, most owner-operators claim they don’t have trouble finding loads if they... --- - Published: 2023-05-25 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/how-to-become-a-hazmat-tanker-driver/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights The demand for truck drivers is only continuing to grow, and there are many different types of truck driving jobs. Whether you’re a new driver or if you already have a couple of years of experience, it’s a good idea to accumulate any endorsements you can. It just makes you more marketable in general. Hazmat tanker jobs are just one of many truck driving jobs. If you seriously thinking about becoming a hazmat tanker truck driver, here are a few things you should know first. What is a hazmat truck / tanker? Hazmat trucks are responsible for delivering and disposing hazardous materials. Hazardous materials include such things as gases, explosives, poisons, corrosive chemicals, and radioactive materials. Hazmat tanker drivers are not limited to only hauling hazardous material, however. They can also drive any non-hazardous tanker as well. What are the requirements?   Becoming a certified hazmat tanker driver means adding some more specific endorsements to your existing CDL. You will need additional training that is specifically designed for transporting and handling hazardous materials. Effective February 2022 – A driver who wants a hazmat endorsement must complete training required by the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) program. This training is available at ProDriverU. com After you get your CDL, you will go through a background check and complete the rest of the application requirements. The application requires the following: Take an approved ELDT Hazmat Training Course Pass the HAZMAT knowledge Test Proof of Age requirement (must be at least 21 years old) Proof... --- - Published: 2023-03-30 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/what-are-the-cdl-entry-level-driver-training-eldt-regulations/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights, SAGE News & Updates The ELDT regulations were issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is part of the US DOT. The ELDT rules set the minimum Federal requirements for training that entry-level drivers must complete before being permitted to take certain commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills or knowledge tests on or after February 7, 2022. ELDT applies to individuals applying to: Obtain a Class A CDL or Class B CDL for the first time; Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL; Obtain a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time. The ELDT requirements apply to individuals who obtain a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) on or after February 7, 2022 (as long as the CLP has not expired). The ELDT regulations are not retroactive; individuals who were issued a CDL (or an S, P, or H endorsement) prior to February 7, 2022 are not required to complete training for the respective CDL or endorsement. The FMCSA has established the Training Provider Registry (TPR), which has a searchable database of CDL training providers that have registered with FMCSA. Only CDL training providers listed on the TPR can provide ELDT CDL training. There are no specific hours of training required for ELDT. Instead drivers must receive training in 30+ “theory” (knowledge) topics, and receive hands on driving “skills” training until the driver is “proficient” in skills, as determined by the training provider. Skills training includes things like vehicle inspection, backing maneuvers and... --- - Published: 2023-02-22 - Modified: 2025-06-21 - URL: https://staging.sageschools.com/new-eldt-online-cdl-training-platform-meets-fmcsa-requirements/ - Categories: CDL Training, Trucking Career & Industry Insights, SAGE News & Updates Beginning February 7, 2022, in compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA’s) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rule, any individual trying to obtain their Commercial Drivers License (CDL) for the first time, must successfully complete an approved program of theory and behind-the-wheel instruction before they can take their CDL skills test. This training program must be approved by the FMCSA, and listed on their Training Provider Registry (TPR). Finding an FMCSA approved training provider near you may prove to be difficult for a while as training providers develop programs to meet these requirements, and providers currently meeting requirements may be overwhelmed by demand. Luckily, there are a handful of online options being offered by providers like ProDriverU. Automotive Technician Program Request More Information Next Classes Start August 25, 2025¶ *High school diploma or equivalent required for enrollment. Ready to Make a Change? Get Started Today! Book a Campus Tour > Automotive Technician Training Program UEI's Automotive Technician Training Program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on shop training they need to become entry-level automotive technicians. The automotive training program provides students with instruction on maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing automobiles. The program combines the theoretical aspects of automotive diagnostics with hands-on training in a shop environment, enabling students to service and repair any type of automobile. UEI's Auto Technician Training Program familiarizes students with basic and advanced automotive technologies through a curriculum covering engine theory, fuel systems, electrical diagnostics, ignition systems, tune-ups, automatic transmissions, wheel alignment, and onboard computerized engine control. If you enjoy working on cars and want to become an auto mechanic, consider enrolling in UEI's Auto Mechanic Training Program. The experienced automotive instructors have years of real-world mechanic experience that they will use to teach you automotive maintenance and vehicle repair.
